Developing a Vision for Action
Report on the Community Engagement Project 2022
By Kerry McInnes
Our public consultation project started in March 2022 and was finalised in February 2023 with two main outputs, which was the action plan and a final report on the community project. This consultation was funded by National Lottery for Scotland Awards for All and conducted by Kerry McInnes as Development Worker for the project. The Action Plan has been developed in part from the results of the 2022 community consultation, and informed by the aspirations of the trustees and volunteers closely involved with the project. The overall direction has been guided by our Vision and Mission statements.
The action plan is required to develop an integrated approach to the management of this area and to support the development and growth of FFWF and is a working and ever evolving document which is to be reviewed annually. To inform the action plan, a community engagement programme was initiated consisting of stakeholder interviews, an on-line survey, a Drop-in Day and an Open Day Festival to record and collate information, opinions and ideas from the local community.
Throughout the community engagement project, it was clear that there is genuine support and appreciation for the work that FFWF is carrying out in the area. Improved mental health and wellbeing, education and learning new skills were cited as the major potential benefits of the project and opportunities for young people, especially teenagers, and those wanting to work on the land should be prioritised.
Better communication between other groups and the community are needed to aid collaboration, increase awareness and bolster volunteer numbers. To help safeguard the natural beauty and biodiversity of the area, removal of invasive species, dissemination of information, and sensitive development of the Community Garden area should be considered. The land of FFWF is a popular area of Forres. By welcoming the community onto the land through public events, talks and volunteering sessions, FFWF have a clear opportunity to impart knowledge and skills in a way that will champion and protect the special qualities of the area for future generations.
